New bloggers often make a big mistake by starting a random blog. They try to cover everything on a single blog and end up wasting their time.
Having a randon blog has many disadvantages. Here are best of them:
1. People Do Not Subscribe Easily. Unless you are an exceptional writer, you will have hard time finding subscribers. If people don't know what your next post will be about, they won't subscribe easily. I have myself done this mistake. After trying every (ethical and white hat) method, I got 26 subscribers in 3 months, a number that Blogging With Success achieved in just 15 days.
2. Monetizing: Since you do not have a fixed niche, finding advertisers for you blog will be a headache. Even if you go with contextual ads, they will not be targeted. I know this because I had Google AdSense ads showing matrimonials oin the sidebar with first post about technology!
3. Designing: When you design a blog, you keep in mind the kind of visitors. But with a random blog, chossing a design is hard. It may fit well with one category but with another, it may look totally unprofessional. Would you like a tech blog with flowery design (unless flower is made of Silicon?)
Random blogs are not bad. Instead, they teach you many things. If you have one, you can use it in following ways.
1. Finding a Good Topic: If you have written a lot of posts, find the one in which most of your interesting and informative articles fall. Seek help of some friends for this as different view points are always good. When you have the new topic, just start a new blog on that topic or follow next step.
2. Change: If your random blog has good Page Rank, then focus on one category. Keep writing good posts on that and remove previous "unrelated" posts slowly.
3. Freelancing: Instead of having random articles on a blog, it will be good to have them on related websites. Just write and submit to websites like Triond.
I have used Triond myself and they pay well. You earn for views and comments on your articles. There is no limit to earn. According to what I have fogured out, they pay $0.01 per 5 page views, $0.01 per 2 comments. Payout limit is $0.50 via PayPal.
To sum it up, it requires a lot more hard work with a random blog than a targetted one. So, next time you start a blog, make sure its focused!

I have a random blog. I LOVE my random blog. It is true what you say about the hardships, it comes with all of that. But this month, my blog was read by RSS over 4000 times. (1500 last month.) I would say though, that I am an exceptional writer… Excuse me for saying that myself, but I just want to encourage those that are in my shoes to not abandon the blog if they really love it.
I would love to have a niche blog for the easiness of it, but no matter how much I think, I can’t seem to be able to decide which one of my beloved topics I would drop.
I’m not making much money by the blog to be honest, but I haven’t gone into advertising yet. I’ve had experimental Project Wonderful adds there, and I got advertisers, just not very well paid. However, I’ve getting better at attracting people to the blog, and I’m still learning things, so I’m hoping I will eventually find a good solid readership, but most likely I have to find something more adventurous for monetising than just adds… Or start another more targeted blog, but I will not give up my mixed bag!
I, too, have a random blog, albeit around a general theme, and it is most reflective of me because I do not like being nailed down to one interest or passion and having more than one blog to maintain is just simply not going to happen. That being said, I completely agree that getting sustained readership as well as search traffic is more challenging because the blog isn’t specialized. I think if you are wanting to maintain a random blog, you have to accept the fact that it requires more patience to build your readership and you will most likely not achieve heavy monetization. But the thing I love most about the blogosphere is that anything is possible, so who knows? Maybe I’ll start a revolution with my random blog, or someone else will with theirs, and then all the theories will fly out the window. Until then, however, I appreciate your insight, and if/when I start another blog or website, I will ensure it has a more specific focus. Potentially.
I have several blogs and I must say that having a random blog for me is great. I blog just about anything. I find that I have more subscribers there than I do in the others. Also, I offer 125 x 125 ad space and I have currently 4 advertiser paying.
You have made very good point on how to set up your blog to make money. Those points can be tweaked a bit and can apply for a random blog.
For “whateverebay” I have experienced all of your steps. In fact, I just changed the designed just recently. I have finally obtained some sponsors that I will promote in February and must have a good layout.
This is a successful post for you – “Comments”

You are indeed a good writer. I learned a lot from Psychology of helping people.

I agree, its really hard (sometimes) to get nailed down to a particular topic. As a blogger I felt many times that I should write something (if not much) about terrorism, but I had to hold this desire back because of time restrictions.
Whenever you start your next focused blog, Best of Luck.
i’m focus on my blog theme and my blog name to attract more visitors i usually link to blogger who share the same theme with me maybe by linking up to them i got my pr3 in just 5 months of blogging
Hi!
So much to learn about blog. I wish I can learn them all by this year. Thank you friend for your article. Will use them in the future.
See you around.
I like your thoughts on random blogging. However one can be a good random blogger but it requires lot more attention and role while blogging to have random readers on the blog. What do you think?
Mr. I, don’t know about random blogs – but i have a blog with covers around 3 areas. Don’t know if that’s right or wrong – since I’m a new blogger, would request your thoughts on this one
Awaiting your reply

Since reply was too long for comment, I have sent it to your e-mail address.
I have a random blog and I love it!
I enjoy writing about a different subject everyday and my readers do too. I have a nice following, which shows that I don’t have to commit to one thing.
It’s boring to talk about *sewing* every single day and I wouldn’t want to read it everyday either.
When I go to someone’s blog, I usually follow a random blog. I want to know about the writer, hear about their day, crafts, randoms….
Random is good, IMO.
I blog about what I enjoy….I blog for fun, not for profit.
Life is too short to make everything about money.
Your blog is certainly lively and vibrant — your readers can see that (it’s in your tagline, loud and clear) and they keep coming back. So you’re in your “niche.” You’re your best customer and if you’re satisfied, it’s all good. Hey did you ever give the answer for the dandelion contest?
