The Blogger’s Block

They say that ‘an ounce of  prevention is worth a pound of  cure.’ Yet, how can this simple quote apply to blogging?

Let’s time travel forward into your blogging future, two years from now.

You’re earning at a fixed passive income of [insert your desired amount here] and then you say to yourself, “I’m doing good with my blog. What can I do to make the readers stay?”

And then it hits you: you must have written like hundreds of articles already for your blog, and now the dreaded moment of every blogger has arrived “what will I write about in my next post?”

At some point in your blogging life, you will hit this very roadblock: the dilemma of what to write next. You will feel the blogger’s block, a momentary lack of ideas and interest for your next blog post. It’s very common and most of the time will definitely strike you if you have not updated your blog for a long time.

How to avoid the Blogger’s block:

  • Depending on your niche, research is always vital for the next idea for your blog post. If you’re running a celebrity gossip niche blog, then go for blogs which offer the latest and hottest celebrity gossips. If you’re blogging about automobiles, check the official sites of the car makers or enthusiasts to know the latest information about the newest sports car or motorcycle. Put your unique spin on that information.
  • Most newbie bloggers feel the need to update their blogs on a daily basis. This is ideal and at the same time, wrong. Why? Your new blog posts will overlap your other blog posts, pushing it far away into the older posts section. This was the mistake that I made with  my personal blog and now I am almost fresh of ideas with what to write next. For an average rate of updating your blog, it’s advisable to start off with two posts per week. Then if you see that your readers numbers are rising, then increase your posts per week to three. Go at your readers’ pace, not your own. This will also give you ample time to do some social bookmarking, blog commenting and so much more while waiting for the next idea to pop up through into that noggin of yours.

It doesn’t hurt to take a little breather from blogging, but make sure you’ve got enough articles to keep your readers’ attention.

“Slow and steady wins the race”, a quote definitely applicable to all bloggers.

When was your last block and what did you do about it?

Luckily (knocking on every square inch of wood around me), I haven’t encountered this problem yet.

I don’t blog everyday – I can’t imagine the pressure to publish good content on that kind of timeline. I usually post every other day (3-4 times a week) and while I get the most views/comments on the published day, I’ve found that I still get a decent amount of views/comments the day after. I think if I were to publish a new post every day, a lot of my posts might be skipped by those who typically read them the day after I post them.

@Creative Junkie – That’s exactly what some of the new bloggers are doing. They fill up their blog with so much content with no campaigning whatsoever. This is a double edged sword because not only is it good for your blog but it’s bad for you because your readers will not get the chance to read your other articles.

As a Web designer, I’ve learned that users stick to viewing only the Index or Home page of a site or blog, and not the succeeding pages.

I have two blogs and I post twice per week. I just write about whatever that hits my fancy and do not really focus on getting traffic, although it would be nice to get some significant amount of readers every now and then.

This was helpful. I for one is guilty of the “must post daily” newbie thought. Thanks for the article, it was a nice read.

blogger’s block doesn’t really quite apply to me considering that I have so many blogs to update and I do have a steady stream of articles / posts to make. “So many blog posts to write, so little time” is my usual pattern.

I know what you mean, so many blog posts to write, so little time. Blogger’s block is not my enemy. Time is…
