How StumbleUpon Can Help Your Blog

StumbleUpondiscovers web sites based on your interests, learns what you like and brings you more.

So, how does it help your blog actually? You may say it can’t.  Yes, it can’t help your blog directly — at least it can’t simply boost the number of visitors of your blog instantly. If you really need traffic help real fast, don’t rely on StumbleUpon.

Let’s look at it from a different perspective. What does StumbleUpon do? It’s used mainly to discover web sites for you and allow you to surf the internet based on your categories. Then, how can this help you? For me, it helps me a lot when I try to find new content for my blog.   I select categories I want, and start going though sites that others have found ’stumble-worthy.’  Using this, I get more than enough interesting articles. For example, this post about free programs for Windows users gave me the idea to write software reviews last year in my Destiny blog.

Not only that, I learned much from Stumbling websites.  I read many English articles (remember,  English is my second language) which improves my writing. Stumbling also helps me to find many things that I didn’t know before. Remember, knowledge is a golden asset for bloggers, and learning new things is always nice.

And then,  don’t forget about StumbleUpon’s other functions. You can also connect with friends and share your discoveries, meet people that have similar interests, and check out what other people are discovering.  I do find this is the most convenient way to share my discoveries with my friends, and thus it also serves as a way to promote your blog. This is why people always ask for Stumble ;) since StumbleUpon is just a free advertisement. The more your article gets Stumbled, the greater chance you will get to have more visitors. This does  not come instantly. Just write good content and promote it regularly, and as time passes if people find your articles good, they will stumble them, giving you more traffic.

This is just my opinion, if you have other uses of StumbleUpon that help your blog do let me know, yes?

True. Although all my traffic doesn’t come from Stumbleupon, there is always the chance that you can be stumbled and it gets passed around and the next thing you know, you have 1,000 visitors to your site. I prefer it over Digg. Right now, I get a lot of traffic from Reddit.com and Fave.com. In the end, I always ask people to stumble my articles rather than anything else.

Like Fransiska, I learn quite a bit while browsing SU! It’s an effective social networking strategy since many of my friends there are bloggers. We comment on and give thumbs up to posts that we like. Using the browser toolbar I can easily send the post page to someone (right Fransiska? ) — it actually display without any clicking or cut/paste if the person also has a toolbar with a ‘flaming’ incoming mail icon.

True, I once even had 1200+ visitors on one day coming from one single StumbleUpon article!
The thing is, it messes up your stats bigtime, most of these visitors don’t even stay on your website for 3 seconds, and thus make your bouncerate go skyhigh, lowering your adsense earnings etcetera in the long run.
I did find out that there are a few things you can do to keep your SU visitors longer on your website:

Interesting post regarding SU. You mentioned at the start of your post: -
“at least it can’t simply boost the number of visitors of your blog instantly”.

I find that most of my traffic comes from Stumble. In particular posts which I publish then self-stumble. The ’spikes’ in my traffic from SU are almost immediately after the post has been published.

For example I wrote a post at the start of my blog career entitled: -

Could this be perpetual motion in action? – The Whipmag Overunity device.

Within 24 hours I was getting 4000-5000 visitors a day from SU, the traffic then ebbed away. Even though the post was written several months ago, I still occasionally receive what I like to call ‘Stumble spikes’.

I find SU to be a great resource for connecting with like minded people, and also weird and wonderful websites which I wouldn’t otherwise search for.

Indeed, I also noticed that these spikes come back regularly, but smaller then the initial peak.

I know several friend blogger of mine using SU to promote their blog heavily, while others don’t care about it at all…

Each one has its own way for promotion, but literally using SU is a cheap and a good exposure. Sending a page to a friend, asking it to be read and stumbled (if worthy) if example, is easier than putting up your own advertisement elsewhere.

i have had a lot of referrals from SU, thanks to fransiska and a few friends. it indeed can help a blog get the “visibility” it needs.

I also wrote a post on this not too long ago. I stated that StumbleUpon increases traffic, but is not very good at increasing regular visitors or comments.

It might also depends on the content itself, though.

When I stumble, I don’t leave comment often too, but only for an extraordinary post. Maybe luck factor plays a big role here. :)

But more visitors means more chance to get a regular reader.

I stumbled this recently:

Could be a way to answer your question.
