Starting down the path to successful blogging

by Justin · 8 comments

So, you want to be a blogger and be among the few to earn up to a hundred thousand dollars a month (the most ideal and sought after earning for all bloggers) in “passive income”. However the path to earning the big bucks through blogging is not a smooth road; it takes effort to keep up the content and niche of your blog, it takes dedication to give time by browsing through different blogs and communities and promoting your blog, it takes patience to earn little by little with each day. Some can pull off huge earnings in a span of 6 months after starting their blogs, while some take a year or 2 before they start making the big dough. So if you have what it takes to be a blogger who’ll take this seriously and have all the qualities I mentioned, please continue reading this article. I write this article from experience.

Starting out:

There are a number of blogging services available on the internet, some are for free, and some require payments. But all of them have the capability to give you what you want: a place to put in your thoughts and earning at the same time. To start with, here are a few blogging services which are the most widely used blog services in the whole world:

Blogger - one the most widely used blogging service in the world. With its easy to use interface and its user friendly layout schemes and tons of customized templates available, blogspot.com is favored by beginners and experts alike.

WordPress – WordPress is also one of the most highly used CMS (content management system) by bloggers. However, unlike Blogger, WordPress requires from the user a little bit of background in HTML / CSS / php. But some of their templates offer the same features with Blogspot.

Typepad – this blog service is also highly used but requires an annual fee. It does offer features which do not exist in Blogger or WordPress.

After signing up, you might want to think of the niche of your blog. While some prefer their blogs to be personal while earning, some delve into other topics like entertainment, lifestyle, etc, to cater to a worldwide audience. Then again, it’s all up to your preference. My blog is a personal blog which offers advice and insights about romance and love. Corny you might say, but it’s all up to you. What matters is that the blog maintains your interest in updating and promoting it, and not just maintain the interest and appeal of your readers.

Content:

So now you have a blog, your niche. Now what? I would suggest filling up your blog with original content for a month or at an average of 1 blog post per day. That way, the readers will know that your blog is being updated daily. If you want to quote content from other sites into your blog, please don’t forget to put in the source where you got the content. Copying other people's work will get you in trouble.

For now this is what you need to do if you really want to start down the path to successful blogging. Blog promotion techniques will be discussed at another post. Till then...

When I started blogging I tried Blogger and WP, but preferred Blogger — much easier to use. Of course I now see the value of the WP platform. Still Blogger is a good choice for starting out. What would you recommend for small businesses that want a ‘corporate’ blog? After all they would be considered newbies to the blogosphere.

blogger does offer a lot of corporate and formal templates which may cater to those who are seeking to create corporate blogs. in my honest opinion, everything would fall on the template actually and how you place your widgets to give it that sleek corporate look you want for your blog.
