Quick Tip for a Cleaner Sidebar – Put Social Icons in a Table

by SBA on February 7, 2011 · 34 comments

This post series is about ways to organize your sidebar widgets for that "clean" design. Never let the sidebar detract from your content or your blog's attractiveness! So if necessary use these tips to  re-landscaping those necessary bits of information you want visitors to see.

The sidebar is another way to navigate and explore important content.  After all the menu can only hold so much.  Here's a quote from Bloggingforbranding.com on the purpose of sidebar widgets:

  • Help readers navigate your site
  • Encourage readers to go deeper into your site
  • Help readers connect with you beyond the blog
  • Encourage readers to leave comments
  • Provide “social proof” that your blog is the best ever (e.g # readers)
  • Help make you money (with advertisements or affiliate products)

Let's skip the issue of which widgets you 'must have' since this depends on the blog owner's niche, promotion strategy and personal preferences.  If you're a mommy or coupon blogger then the more widgets the merrier. Many have two sidebars to avoid widgets running long after the content ends.  The question is really one of prioritization and placement. The most important widgets need to be 'above the fold' and before the end of the post.  The footer (really a horizontal sidebar) is an exception since people expect to take a glance there --- just as they might eye the menu section.

So let's look at the first tip to tame the widgets you decide to use in your design and reclaim valuable real estate.

Tip 1:  Minimize Social Icons Space in Sidebar

Today many bloggers have accounts on Twitter and fan pages on FaceBook. Similar to RSS feeds, these connections help promote your site.  So rather than rely on the standard RSS icon in the header or at the end on the menu, we put those cute icons at the top of the sidebar in living color!

Separate widgets for each account can take up a lot of space.  This Twitter image is an eye catcher but a space hog (150 x 90). Compare that to the 4  icons which take up less space than any of the widgets!  Hover the mouse over each icon and you see text like "Follow me on Twitter".

Some bloggers may want to keep the full "get updates by email" box to really attract the reader's attention. Email lists are especially good for reader retention since they do nothing but open the email! However you can still promote that option at the end of each post.

Lesson: Use large attractive icons across the sidebar. Carve out less space and still keep this widget in your reader's face.

If you have a wider sidebar, use larger icons. Most are square and you can easily scale to 48 x 48. Also make the icons blend with your design or blog topic. Here's an example from MotherRimmy's Culinary Delights:

How to: Create a Social Icon Table

Preparation: Open lots of  tabs/windows

  1. Open a browser window to the accounts you want to open when reader clicks each icon. e.g.
    http://twitter.com/bwsteam   and  http://feeds.feedburner.com/BWS
    http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=BWS  and http://facebook.com/bloggingwithsuccess
Of course you can use our links above, substitute your account name!
  2. Use Table Code Generator, online software to create the table structure. Open in browser window.
  3. Add a new draft post which you will not publish, but simply use to compose the widget table. Open in browser window, HTML view!
  4. Select the icons you want to use, download to your pc and cull out the 4 you want to use in the size you want. There are tons available, e.g.
41 Amazing Free Social Icon Sets for Designers

    http://www.iconshock.com/social-icons/

Video: Open video screen cast in separate window and follow along - using pause as necessary.

Summary of video steps:

  1. Create table shell and put in the draft post Html Mode
  2. In visual mode, upload each icon into a table cell, add the link that takes you to the account.
  3. In Html mode, copy entire table
  4. Create a widget and paste the copied table. You can also add the table to an existing widget, such as your About info.

Yes true….large high graphic icon may give more attraction than small one! Good explanation.

SBA April 13, 2011

Thank you Techis! You should consider the mouse-over text for the last icon on the right in your blog’s sidebar — showing my ignorance but I didn’t recognize it! So I clicked it and the page was not found…

Last year I did the same thing on my wordpress.com blog. I created an HTML table and uploaded icons and linked all my social networking icons to my social network site profiles. Then and I placed the HTML tablet in a text widget in my sidebar. I like the result. :)

Hi! I agree — very compact and full of choices. Love the way you keep mixing up the blog format (sidebar/column layout, header image… ). Thanks for stopping by.

timethief April 11, 2011

Thanks. I try to freshen my theme by changing header images frequently.

Interesting! :)

PS. My blog is back :D

SBA February 10, 2011

Thanks. So I have to ask, what happened to your blogspot blog??? Did you delete blog which scraps all older posts?

Salman Saeed February 10, 2011

Actually I gave up blogging. But then my domain was not getting on sale, and was just alone in the corner wasted, which was not right, so I took up blogging again and would blog this time seriously! :)

If you want to recapture some of your deleted content try the Google cache e.g. http://technileaks.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-create-or-make-your-own-fonts.html

Then you can copy the content into a new post with old date. First view cache of blogspot homepage then pick up each post listed in the sidebar archives.

Wow, you really were able to point out the difference of at least how much space one would save by using the horizontal widget. Nice! And that too was a great tutorial, I would have to bookmark this post in case I need to change the design of my social bookmark widget.

SBA February 9, 2011

Andrew, thank you for the compliment and please let me know if you’re able to use the tutorial. I should update it to add opening links in a new window, especially the YouTube link!. I notice you duplicate a few of your links like Twitter and RSS in the prime space at the top of the sidebar. Have you done a study on the effectiveness?
I’d move down the search box since you have one in the menu. Future tip will talk about tabbed boxes so you can use your wide-sidebar to tab ‘recent posts’ and ‘popular posts’ without mis-aligning your 125px ad block. (see our tabs at top of sidebar on this blog)
Personally I find the red comment number for most commented posts to be distracting and possibly the tag cloud — maybe put on single pages only ?Aren’t the most commented posts often most popular (?).
Again, thanks for joining the discussion and taking my unsolicited feedback!

I love feedback – so thank you.

I have taken on board many of your views. Sometimes you are just too close to your own site to see what changes are required.

I am looking forward to the post on tabbed widgets.

Dang SBA, this was great, so glad Ishan had you come by for this GP, as I’ve learned a ton about sidebar ‘magic’. Even though I’ve been blogging for a while, I know my sidebar still has improvements to be made, no doubt.

Thanks for all the tips!

Hi Marcus,
I recognize your bright lion’s eyes! Yes, I do feel like a guest lately, lol. Maybe Ishan will now let me out of the closet more often? I used to write tons of tutorials but lately I’ve been at our freelancing desk while he is busy with studies and great content writing!

Enough about me. Your sidebar looks fine. I’d add the title on social icons for mouse-over effect. Maybe, don’t show recent posts on homepage (upcoming Tip about smart widgets). Love the Sheridan clan slide show — shouldn’t that be ‘Sheridan Pride.. lol’. I’d move those ‘web coaching testimonials’ higher, above the fold — that’s what lions do!

Thanks for your encouraging feedback.

Dana February 9, 2011

Usually, I use manual html coding to create the tablet since I never know if there are some table code generator. Thanks to this article, I know can save my time to create a table. :)

Welcome Dana,
I’m happy if I can save you some time! The generator is not perfect (and has ads, after all it’s free!) but it gives you a framework. You may also find this online WYSIWYG html editor useful to refine the table as you flesh it out: http://www.onlinehtmleditor.net/

Thanks for commenting.

Gotcha!

Elise February 9, 2011

This is a great detailed blog post, Ishan. :)

I have lots of social profiles in my sidebar, lol. I like it, but I DO sometimes think it looks overcrowded. I like having the facebook page in the side (like you have as well) because I think it really encourages people to like the page.

Anyway, this was some great advice all together. Thanks!

SBA February 9, 2011

Hello Elise.
Thanks for the positive feedback, appreciation is always welcomed.
Details is sort of my middle name and I thought screen casts would save some words, but….
Your commentators avatar widget is different — is that my picture on the second row? No it’s my twin Ishan.. lol
( I realize you meant Shirley, not Ishan.. lol)

Your sidebar is colorful and matches your intent to connect and give readers unique content. It doesn’t look overcrowded, but you could shorten the random posts list. What if you show just larger titles and no thumbnails in that widget, might be easier to highlight the topics. Also use widget logic to not display random list on homepage, less useful there?

I’d love to see the chameleon’s head or the box as your favicon…

SBA February 8, 2011

Thanks Jens,
The banners go well with your sidebar style of large images that point to a subset of your articles (tags) — getting readers involved beyond the menu bar. Glad you were able to track the effects. Also the footer helps with the sidebar ‘clutter’. As does the Apture bar which has your search box — notice more folks put the standard search box at (near) the end of the sidebar (if at all)….

Jens P. Berget February 8, 2011

Great advice. I have created my own banners in order to make it cleaner. I have experienced more clicks after I added the banners :)

Great tips SBA,

With hundreds of widgets and plug-ins it can be tough to keep the sidebar neat and tidy As a constant fiddler myself, I really appreciate these pointers.

thanks!

Hi SBA – great tips. My sidebar is always pending a change and this article provided me with some major pointers to keep in mind. The table icon generator looks like a fantastic tool. I’m going to play around with that this week. Thank you!

Thank you Jk Allen for your feedback. I was intrigued by you header widget ‘contribute to the what is a hustler list’, so I joined the boys club and left a comment — hope you like it.. lol Nice feature for interaction.

You’ve done a great job of branding the site. The sidebar is perfect. I do find the multiple tweet icons on home page excerpts a bit distracting. May not be necessary? or place below the excepts…

Jk Allen February 8, 2011

You know what…I agree. I’m new to the game SBA- so your advice is well taken. I’m going to make an update on that tonight. Thanks for contributing to “what is a hustler”. peace.

Thanks for commenting Bryan. Yes, you win the prize for minimalist sidebar! Great way to showcase your content and discussion which takes up the page. You have the most important at the top and you repeat the social contact icons at end of posts. I like it!

I do like to show recent post or popular posts widget on single pages — for new visitors hitting search engine results. You can use widget logic for that type of ‘smart dynamic’ sidebar…

Bryan Thompson February 7, 2011

Great tips. Like Dino, I have tried to keep my sidebar pretty neat. I can’t stand for it to be cluttered with stuff. And I’m probably a bit too hard on myself – you’ll find my sidebar changing time and time again – just so I think it looks just right. :)

SBA February 7, 2011

Very nicely done! I’m curious about why you placed the ‘why you should comment’ widget at the top — did you notice a positive effect on comment rate? Also I’m used to seeing the search box higher up but you do provide lots of places for people to explore your site.

Thanks for compliments. I don’t do yoga or purposely meditate. I’ve always been very calm/mellow/laid back… until on rare occasions I need to turn into the Hulk… lol

Oh, I subscribed to your YouTube channel. And I’m available for voice-overs.. lol

Dino Dogan February 7, 2011

I placed the “Why you should comment” box because thats what I saw on blogging bookshelf (Tristan Higbee’s blog) and it made me comment. So I figured it it got me to comment then the same thing will make other people comment on my blog as well.

I think its a nice way of letting people know that Im listening and that I am interested in what they are doing as well.

Since my biz blog is only few months old and I placed the widget very early on, I cant tell if it made a difference but I can tell that Im getting comments and interaction from the community. So…its all good :-)
