Actaully until the head injury 6 months ago I wasn't into skimming. I faithfully read every word. Maybe getting this knock on the noggin has set me free from the bondage of the past ... lol :D

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments.

@Eddie- It is long, I agree. But you have to understand that writing long posts actually helps with SEO...you know content is king, yada, yada, yada....that said, in depth posts typically are aimed at a certain type of reader. It is very hard to be definitive with a 500 word post.

@Fransicka- So true. Most posts I read tend to be either echos in the echo chamber or regurgitations and rewrites from something that someone has already written. Experience gives you a chance to form your own opinion and if you have some personality, you can really spark something.

@Timethief- I agree. But skimming is what all of us do. Typically here is what happens...

You look at the headline and skim the subheadlines...find something you like and start to read. If it piques your interest, you continue reading...if not, you move to the next subheadline....if you read a couple you like, then you think to yourself "whoa, I need to really read this".....if not, you simply move one.

@Vitamin CM- You are very right. Actually knowing what the market wants can be trial and error at best. I think that the 80/20 principle (pareto's principle) comes to my mind. That is precisely why I say that you should view each post like it could be your last. How will people remember you?

Although I do write long posts from time to time I try to restrain myself and focus on brevity. In this case admit that I grew tired of reading the first part of the article so I gave up, skimmed it and zoomed in on the points. These eight points are solid gold and I will be bookmarking them.

Pretty much yes. When I started my personal blog, I wrote many random things, from my life, games, computers, internet etc.

Then, I got my pillar post unexpectedly, as many people commented on that simple article, despite I didn't write it at my best level. It was internet and computer related article. After that, I felt that writing about computer, internet and whatever related to them was my best interest.

It proved to be a success. Even my lack of English writing is limited can be covered with the quality of article. It might be subjective, since I say my article has a quality, but I only repeat what people had said on the comment form. >_> As long as what you post is useful to many people, you can make them your 'pillar' post.

And here in BWS, we hope that every article can be useful to many people, including ourselves. :)

Good article. I would love it if I could just sit down to write an article like that, then actually make it happen. The reality is I just write articles that make sense to me. Some of them don't go over well and others turn out to be a "pillar" type article. I wish I could figure out why some of my favorite ideas flop and others mysteriously grow legs.
My advice is just keep writing what makes sense to you and hopefully the pillar articles will find you.

Haha indeed.

And I really like this 'The best pillar posts are made from experience.'. Whatever you try, you can't gain experience in instant. Age also has important an role here, although not as much as how long you've been doing something.

Hi there,

Interesting article, however I feel it's too long.. and extensive. You might want to split them up into two posts. I had to take a print of this to read it over the weekend. :)

Cheers,
Eddie Gear
