Why do people blog? You need to know why you write for your blog because you will someday need this very reason to continue blogging. Trust me.
Here are three of the more common reasons people start blogging:
1. To Express themselves
People sometimes want a place to express themselves. If in the real world they can't, they do it on the internet. A blog is where they can express themselves fully, without having to worry about anything. A personal blog is a prime example of this, where you can write a daily journal or discuss events affecting your life.
2. To make money
Another reason people start a blog is to earn money on the internet. All they need do is type on a keyboard and click the mouse to earn money. It's very easy to get started this way, compared to real life ventures. Google Adsense and Pay Per Post are the most common programs to earn money with your own blog. Adsense "offers contextual advertising and text-based AdWords ads that are relevant to site content pages." PayPerPost is "an automated system that allows you to promote your services through a network of bloggers."
3. To help others
You gain so much on the internet for free, and some bloggers want to 'give something back' by helping others. Some visit help forums to answer questions, give advice', offer tutorials or talk about mistakes to avoid. Others blog about the environment to get others involved.
As for me, my very own reason to blog is.... to express myself. On my Destiny blog, I can say anything I want. Blogging also allows me to find many great new friends, as I have with the Blogging With Success blog.
So, what's your reason for blogging?

Well … you pretty much nailed it for me … I get the chance to express myself (without my kids’ opinion LOL), I make money, and I LOVE helping others … the other reason for me is as a 40-something, single mom … I feel like it is something I can do for “myself” … as a parent you are so selfless and as a woman we tend to “serve” others our whole life … blogging is something I can do for myself and that’s such a great feeling … makes me “SmiLe” … enjoyed your blog! *huGs* Suzanne
Glad you like it.
First and foremost, I blog as a creative outlet. There’s a cyclone of thoughts going on in my head at all times and blogging helps me get those thoughts out so I can “see” them and make sense of them all. Honestly, if I didn’t do something creative with my thoughts, I’d go out of my ever loving mind.
Additionally, as a stay-at-home mom, I don’t often have a lot of adult contact. The blogging community offers me that opportunity and I have “met” so many people that I otherwise would never know.
1 and 3 mostly, but I don’t mind the money either. Still, if I had all the money in the world, I’d still want to be expressive, and I’d still get a private thrill out of helping others.
There are as many different kinds of blogs and reasons to blog as there are people. The diversity in blogs makes for very exciting & interesting reading. However, if your only motive for blogging is the money then the posts are all about the same length and contain very little that can be called unique and soon the readership dissipates because the lack of passion in the writing becomes obvious.
very engaging post!
i used to blog (personal blog) to express myself especially when i feel strong emotions like happiness, envy, frustration, or anger. pretty helpful too as i had the chance to “fall in love” with a computer, make an ex bf become a rubber shoes trapped inside a freezer, lol
now, the same reason motivates me — to express myself in the field of computers/technology. to share what i’ve learned and help others.
i like this post. kudos ^_^
@timethief: So true. And I think the best reason to blog is… to help others. ^^ We’re all newbie once, and know how hard it was to start a blog.
@techie: your current blog isn’t personal one. Do you still have other blog that I don’t know?
The first reason would be to improve my writing skills. Next, i blog just for the sheer fun of it!I started blogging in 2006 and since then there’s no looking back! One other would be to socialise with people! We can get to know what happens in different parts of the world. Humans are the same throughout the world, but there are things like culture, soceity and religion that make a difference.
im 3 for 3. im blogging to earn money while expressing myself and in return hoping to help others who read my blog.
@rampantheart: And finding a topic that matches them all is very difficult. Let’s face it, humans throughout the world have so many cultures, and often don’t agree with each others.
All three points are valid, few might not be doing it for money.
