How A Laptop Made Me A Better Blogger

Dell Studio 1457 Laptop

Before you start protesting against me and Blogging With Success, let me make clear that no one paid me to promote their laptop company/website!

Recently, I got a Dell Studio 1457 Laptop and after buying it, my blogging experience has changed a lot. So, in this post, I am just going to discuss how a laptop made me a better blogger and how it can make you one too!

I have the freedom!

While I still believe that desktops are far better performing(and their keyboards don't heat up as well!), the biggest plus of laptop is the mobility it offers. I am a free flier and sitting in front of a desktop for hours limits me.

Additionally, I have to visit my grandparents every once in a while(and I love being with them), having a laptop means that I can blog from anywhere. I had a pretty good phone before this(I still have it, it's a Sony Ericsson W595) but writing a blog post on a T9 keypad is not at all a good experience.

With my new laptop, I can blog from any place!

I don't need to worry about power

If you live in a remote location or at a place where power cuts are normal thing, investing in a laptop makes sense. I have killed many post ideas in past because electricity went off when I was in middle of a post and when it came back, I was not in mood of writing!

Now, with 4-5 hour battery backup, I don't have to worry about anything.

I don't have to wait for applications to load

Now, this one is personal. With previous PC, I had to wait a lot for applications to load. But now, with the power of a quad core processor backed by 4 GB RAM, I don't have to wait for anything!

Is it all good?

Well, no! There are some downsides to owning a laptop that have to be considered.

Handling

With desktop, there's not much to worry about. Everything is safe inside that cabinet. With laptop, everything is on your lap and it's moving a lot. A simple drop can destroy everything!

Heating

I don't know about all brands but most of the laptops I have used (not mine, but of relatives or teachers) heat-up after 1-2 hours. This makes writing uncomfortable! I never had to worry about hot keys with my desktop!

Overall, it has been a good experience for me and I enjoy the mobility. If you have an old desktop and need a replacement, consider burning some money on a laptop, I am sure it will be money well burnt!

P.S. Your experiences and advice to a new laptop owner are welcomed! ;)

That makes a lot of sense what you said about the labtop. I had been thinking about one for some time now. Now you have convinced me that it can definitely be an access to use almost anywhere. Thanks for sharing.

cool..i really like the freedom u get frm a laptop. But i would never buy a mac. Buy a laptop and install ubuntu. Raw performance

. I find it great to use and it is good to be familiar with linux-ish systems where your blog will be actually deployed.

I've always liked desktops until laptops became available. The mobility of them is just far to great to resist. Since going to a laptop I don't think going to a desktop would be possible for me.

Ishan June 18, 2010

Hi Roger, thanks for the comment! I am also in same situation! Since buying the laptop, I have turned on the desktop only to copy files.

When you use a desktop you are tied to the specific location, and that's why I also prefer the laptops. To be more specific, I love my laptop because I can blog from my favorite coffee shop… :)

Ishan June 18, 2010

Hi Julian, thanks for commenting!

I like mine because I am frequent traveler and I can not blog from my grandpa's home!

I use a MacBook, and my blogging experience is a lot different than when I was using a desktop. I blog from where ever I'm at. Sometimes I'm at the train, sometimes in a coffee shop other times I'm in bed or on the porch. It's awesome to don't have to think about being stuck at the office in order to blog.

At the moment I'm considering the iPad, but I'm not sure. It seems too small for a better blogging experience. My MacBook is only 13", it seems to be small enough to carry with me on all sorts of missions :)

Hello and Thanks for the comment.

Well, I'm not sure about iPad. I'd prefer keyboard to write the posts than touch. My next laptop will surely be a mac. I have heard only good things about OS X and want to try it out.

Yet not feel any need of laptop but soon will. I'm still happy with my desktop Win 7 PC.

Ishan June 16, 2010

Hi Arafat, Thanks for commenting.

Well, when you buy it, I am sure you will get addicted to it just like me! Windows 7 is a good OS and a huge leap for me as I was using XP before it.

Laptops are really handy as you can work from anywhere and easier to manage. Thanks for sharing Ishan

Ishan June 16, 2010

Thanks for commenting! Yes, I find it really useful when traveling and even when not traveling(old PC seems so slow after using it!)

Jean Sarauer June 15, 2010

I bought my laptop a couple of years ago thinking it would just be a 'backup' for my desktop. Once I started using it, however, I never went back to the desktop. I love being able to work in any room of the house or take it to the coffee shop or wherever I choose. I'm spoiled :)

Ishan June 15, 2010

Hi Jean, Thanks for the comment. Well, looks like reverse has happened and now your desktop is a backup for laptop. I have use my desktop only to transfer settings once after buying laptop. I'm also spoiled! ;)

I use to use a normal PC and I was stuck in on place. Then I got a laptop and had freedom to work any where I wished and to work when I wanted to. Having a laptop makes many things possible and it was one of the best investments I have ever made.

Ishan June 15, 2010

Till now, it has also been the best investment for me too. I love the freedom. In fact, I am with my grandparents right now and I can blog without any problems!

Paul Tech June 14, 2010

The laptop is convenient to type a report or read mails on the go but you got to be careful not to leave it unattended.

And if you are connected via shared networks, your personal details could be at risk.

Ishan June 14, 2010

Hi Paul, Thanks for comment.

Security is definitely a issue! Thankfully, I have my own USB modem to connect to internet and don't use public network.

It is easier to steal but I make sure to be around or keep it around me in my bag.
