Like many of you I was surprised to see the new Google favicon in my browser window. It's most colorful and grabs your attention. But is it in line with Google's branding? Well they have changed the favicon several times from square "G" to the lower case contorted 'g' and now the sort of impressionistic 'g'.
The Washington Post quotes Google saying,
The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices. So the new favicon is one of those, but we've also developed a group of logo-based icons that all hang together as a unified set."
You can see the scaled versions at the Googleblog. What baffled me was learning that the new version is based on a design contest winner, but Google changed the background and placement of the letter 'g'. In my opinion the winning design looks better.

Awesome looks. What we saw during last 10 years, it needs change, My vote for new one Favicon…
I admit, I don’t like the new favicon. I didn’t even realize it was a “g”! I thought it looked like a paw print or something.
But I actually DO like the winning design! THAT looks like a “g” – I wonder why they didn’t go with it?
@Samsonite Bags – that’s what Google thinks — move with the times as they say.
@Creative Junkie – I agree with you about the winning design! Interesting. Glad to see you here.
@SBA, you may like new Favicon but i don’t honestly.
There must be some reason after like and dislike. One of that reason Creative Junkey has already mentioned.
They have created Favicon from the colors of their logo but they can’t enough to manage Red color,
Red color has been used only for once…. However the Favicon does not provide any idea of Google branding. Favicon still requires re-consideration. BTW, thanks for visiting my Blog. Glad to see you on it. By Chaitanya Patel @ SEO Marketing…
I did notice the new favicon….don’t really like this one…previous one was simple and effective…. cool poll widget !!
@ SEO Marketing – Glad you stopped by to add to the discussion.
@rakesh – Yes, the poll widget is quite handy. Add the code to your blog once, then control the poll from the PollDaddy site. They offer different ‘skins’ which you can change remotely.
