Yes, it is a great feeling to make an affiliate sales, especially when you least expect it.

And your tips are great. Writing a review is definitely better than putting up a banner, which will require huge amount of traffic to make a sale.

But a lot of people don't want to write because it takes time and effort to check out the product to have a honest review,.

The first one is a huge tip. I realized it the hard way after displaying numerous banners initially. Only after I started writing useful reviews (after real usage) I started getting some referrals signed up under me.

How can one disagree with that advice. Credibility is very important when you try to sell something. Therefore, selling something that you use is a good indication that you really like it and genuinely advise people to get it as well.
