How We Made Our First Affiliate Sale And How You Can Too

For new bloggers, it does not happen regularly that mail arrives in your inbox saying “Congratulations! You Have Just Made A Sale”.

But when we get it, it’s surely a great experience. Sun shines brighter, grass is greener and everything seems so sweet!

A few months ago, I got an e-mail announcing I had just sold a license of Thesis Theme via my affiliate link and I was like, flying in air. In this post, I will tell you how we did it and how you too can successfully make an affiliate sale!

How To Sell Affiliate Products

  1. Do Not Add Banners, Write: Many bloggers just add some banners in sidebar in the name of affiliate marketing and complain that they are not able to make sales. Well, that method doesn’t work quite well! Instead of adding loads of banners in sidebar(and complain like this), write a review about the product that you want to promote.
  2. Recommend What You Use: It’s not necessary but it is a major factor. When you see an ad for a product but find that the blogger does not use it himself, don’t you loose trust in him? At Blogging With Success, we have always recommend what we use, be it affiliate or non-affiliate. For example, we recommend Thesis because we use it ourselves and know how good it is. Before recommending Apture, we added the bar and saw its usefulness.
  3. Avoid “This Product Is Perfect” Reviews: Ever encountered this type of review? Isn’t it annoying? Well, everyone knows that there’s nothing like perfect. Yet many bloggers will try to sell a product by telling you that it is perfect. Simply, avoid it because it does not work! It will hurt you because such a review will make you look greedy and people will lose trust in you! When we reviewed thesis theme, we made sure to tell you about all the shortcomings in addition to all the good things.

Before writing your own review for a product, remember that it is not that easy to sell affiliate products. It takes a lot of hard work and time. We had to work for 1 full year to make our first sale(although we were not that aggressive with monetizing BWS!)

So, go ahead and write a review of a product you use. Keep above points in mind and enjoy getting those emails with “Congratulations! You Have Just Made A Sale”!

Congratulations on making that sale! You have written an excellent guide here. By following your advice, bloggers can sell without appearing to be like that fellow in your image.

Hi Jean, Thanks for comment. I am glad that you liked the post. Well, I hope bloggers learn a bit because 90% of bloggers look like the guy in image when selling something!

Congrats. I can’t sell an affiliate product for the life of me. I’m stuck earning a buck a day through adsense at the moment.

It took me time before I realize that banner does not work. I never thought that making an affiliate sale could be so hard. Still, I have not tried to make a review. Perhaps I should take heed of your advice here. :-)

How can one disagree with that advice. Credibility is very important when you try to sell something. Therefore, selling something that you use is a good indication that you really like it and genuinely advise people to get it as well. Banners can work sometimes, but in order to do that, you would most probably need more and more traffic to get the conversions.

The first one is a huge tip. I realized it the hard way after displaying numerous banners initially. Only after I started writing useful reviews (after real usage) I started getting some referrals signed up under me.

Hi Ajit,
Thanks for comment. Your comment was caught in spam by Akismet. Just released it. Well, we ourselves experimented with banners before writing this review and it was review that made sales!

Yes, it is a great feeling to make an affiliate sales, especially when you least expect it.

And your tips are great. Writing a review is definitely better than putting up a banner, which will require huge amount of traffic to make a sale.

But a lot of people don’t want to write because it takes time and effort to check out the product to have a honest review,.
