Without comments, will a blog survive? Of course it will. Unless the delete button is pressed, blog will stay that way. But then, will it have any real value? A blog relies heavily on traffic and also comments. Interaction with readers on a comment form is the most valuable thing a blog can have. It will make your blog more lively, trust me. Also, the number of comments posted on a blog would affect advertisers since they will prefer to post their ad on a blog that has 20 rather than 5 comments per post.
So, how to encourage people to comment on your blog? There are a few easy steps.
1. Visit other blogs and leave a nice comment there, try to befriend them. However, don't leave junk comments or drop your link only, add something that is useful for that post. Leave a honest and friendly comment so that they will be enticed to click your profile and go to your blog. If you've succeeded in getting this, you're one step closer to getting a reaction to your posts. When you've become friends, they will visit your blog regularly and comment there as well, it's inevitable. You might want to do the same thing when someone leaves a comment on your post. Try to visit their blog and leave a 'reciprocal' comment there.
3. Reply to your readers' comments. Even if you just say 'Thanks for visiting!' that will make readers know you do read and appreciate their comments and thus, they will come back to post more.
4. Check out their profile or the 'about' page on their blog to find out where you can leave a shoutout or message.
5. The old way 'join bloggers community' would do too. Again, BlogCatalog is a good place to start. You can then start a discussion about your post. People there are nice enough to leave a comment on your site after that.

excellent tips! i especially agree with item number 3 — reply to your readers’ comments. i remember this two blogs i visit. aside from great content, their acknowledgement of the commentor’s comments never fail to surprise me because even those which suspiciously look like spam comments? they graciously reply back to them (totally admirable)….. i must say, ive been neglectful on the about page on my blog. really need to update the lorem ipsum content lol
thanks a lot for this wonderful info. very useful and informative. certainly a big help to blogging with success. ^_^
Uh… replying nicely to spam comments? That’s really something…
@techniqueal – I look at authors who don’t respond to comments as a warning sign, beware, especially if the post is about a widget that someone has trouble with already!
I’ve tried a lot of these tactics to try to encourage folks to comment, but often times, few folks comment.
It’s not my traffic (I get plenty!), so there’s got to be something I’m doing wrong. Any tips?
Ummm this is just my opinion,
You’ve posted too many threads without any additional texts. They’re just mainly consisted with one picture and that’s all….
I find it less ‘commentable’ (was that even a word?)’.
@ Thomas
I have visited your blog and I agree with Fransiska, yuo have some posts without any text. You should have at least 4-5 sentences telling what the photograph is about. Secondly, you should Call your Readers for actions. Researchs have proved that about 1% of visitors comment at posts.
You should encourage people to comment on posts. If you have read a few posts here, we always encourage people to subscribe to feeds and comment on posts by adding lines like “share your experience…” etc. You can also add calls to actions.
I will write about it shortly.
Anyway, one thing I must say, you have got stunner of a design. Your sidebar is 200 pixels wide, 125×125 ads there look small. Why don’t you try Google Adsense ads there or use Bidvertiser ads there. You can create custom-sized adbox with Bidvertiser. However, if you want to continue with 125×125 format, just make it center aligned.
