Basic SEO Habits Are Easy To Establish

Good habits, once established are just as hard to break as are bad habits -Robert Puller

Search Engines

Search Engine Optimization is nothing special. All you have to do is get in the habit of doing the basics right. Here are some basic habits that will help in better Blog SEO:

Decorate The Text

Decorating important text not only attracts reader's attention but also (Search Engine) Spider's. Make important text bold or colored for good Search Engine Optimization!

Use Headlines Correctly

As we have said before, you need to make your posts scannable. In this process, you have to use headlines well. By headlines, I do not mean that you should make text big by adjusting the font size. Use H tags for this.

Why? Because H tags in HTML mean that the text between them is headline (i.e. important!). Search Engines consider headlines and give extra weight to the text inside these tags. If you use keywords properly, your chances of ranking higher on Search Engine Results Page (SERP) will increase. The words for section headings in this post are framed with H3 tags.

Do not overuse Headlines. This does not look good and search engines may consider it keyword spamming.

Use Alt Tags

Google Image Search can also send some traffic if you use alt tags correctly. Keep alt tag related to surrounding content.

WordPress users, form habit of giving caption and title to images. WordPress automatically assigns the title of image as alt.

Enter Meta Information

In a previous post, I talked about using the WP plugin HeadSpace to automatically generate meta information. But I did not add a very important thing!

Do not rely on HeadSpace fully. Write Important Meta Information Yourself.

Why? Because no plugin can do what a human can do! Automatically generated meta information may not be related or accurate.

If you use any other platform that supports meta information, enter manually!

Just make sure that you form these habits and use them consistently.

Any other basic habit that you have in mind? Do share in comments.

*sigh* – I hate that I don’t understand this stuff.

I just want to write … I wish I could afford someone to take care of all of this other stuff for me.

Great post. I do use headspace but you are right that you need to enter some of your own information in there. Thanks for the advice!

I recently started a blog and didn’t know until recently how important this stuff really is. If you don’t have good SEO habots, you could remain on page 1227 for a long time! This is a great post. Thanks.

Good basic information. I personally stopped using Headspace because it was buggy or was conflicting with some of my other plugins. I use Platinum SEO as well as Simple Tags – the combination works great. Simple tags lets you put your main keywords in and then automatically tag every post which contains one of those keywords. And the tags because meta-keywords as well.

I also use Platinum SEO as well as Simple Tags and have had good results so far (though my site’s still young).

I also like those tools because they’re very easy to use and don’ t seem to take up too much of my time so I can keep my focus on the content.
