OK, so now you have your blog, you now have your niche, content, ads and other widgets you might need for your blog. The next step on the path to successful blogging is to have a steady amount of traffic (by traffic I mean the number of visitors you get). For bloggers, success often means to having a lot of loyal readers. Note that the steps below are based on personal experience and preference.
Blog communities / groups – there are over a thousand blog communities or groups on the internet; some communities exist within a community (like
MyBlogLog.) In these groups you'll find other bloggers like you, some may be amateurs or starting up and some are already in the professional stage (professional bloggers do exist!). Joining in communities will definitely help increase your traffic as most members will take the time to view your blog, and maybe leave a comment or two. Remember, traffic means more readers.
Social Networking – Digg, Technorati, StumbleUpon, Delicious… these are some of the most widely used social bookmarking or social networking sites. Similar to a browser's bookmark function, these sites enable you to bookmark your articles, favorite sites and will be published for other viewers to see. Search engines also crawl for articles placed within these social networks. (Articles in Digg currently have higher search ranking than other bookmarking sites). Bookmark your articles, enter in the appropriate keywords and let the search engines crawl, and visitors view them. A little precaution though, some networking sites frown own self-promotion as your primary purpose. Don't stick out like a sore thumb at StumbleUpon --- for ever 10 thumbs up of other people' sites, you can safely submit one of yours.
Link Exchange – Link exchange is the process of adding a blog's URL to your blogroll or linklist, in exchange for the blog owner adding your URL to their list. Be wary of that site's reputation though, since it will also affect you in the long run. Be sure to check out the community or group that you joined in, because chances are there will also be people
there who are willing to exchange links. To be on the safe side, please add links that are related or useful to the niche of your blog/site. Adding a casino link to a dating blog is definitely a big NO-NO.
Blog commenting – Blog commenting is similar to link exchange, only this time, you and another blogger will exchange comments or it could be a one way comment. By commenting on a another blogger's post, not only are you giving insights, but this also helps you generate traffic. Why? Because chances are the blog owner and their reader community will view your blog as well, maybe even leave a comment or click on your profile or your site’s URL.
These are just some of the methods for proper blog promotion. And just for clarification, the BWS Team will not recommend any illegal SEO techniques as it will both affect our reputation and penalize you in the long run.
Okay what are some of your techniques for blog promotion?

I’ve used all of these except link exchanges. Not a fan of long blogrolls and to be useful you need lots of them or a few high page rank gems. These methods are part of what it means to blog. We just need to acknowledge it and set aside the time — who knows we could end up enjoying it and losing track of time!
