Blog Contest Fraud – Beware It’s Real

by SBA · 23 comments

How do you know if you've been 'scammed' by a blog contest? Well, first there is that 'sinking feeling' in the pit of your stomach, which you brush off. Then at the end of the contest your jaw drops and you ask "what just happened here?" Then you think, it's just sour grapes and again brush it off. But then a friend gives you a slap in the face when he says: "hey buddy, you've been scammed."

That's what happened when I entered my very first contest, using my personal blog, BPWebNews. I would have used this blog but it was around the time of migrating to WP and some permalinks were messed up. The prize money was to be used on BWS to hold contests and other forms of advertising. My entry, a review of the contest owner's blog, satisfied all of the rules and the writing was pretty darn good (lol). So I had a pretty good chance of winning. Take a look: Technical ravings from a teenage millionaire.

Some Definitions

  1. scam- "A fraudulent business scheme; a swindle." i.e. to defraud, usually of money.
  2. fraud-"In the broadest sense, a fraud is a deception made for personal gain." I also like the definition "A piece of trickery; a trick."
  3. libel-"A false publication, as in writing, print, signs, or pictures, that damages a person's reputation; The act of presenting such material to the public. i.e. malicious.

So let's use the term fraud. I honestly feel I was tricked for someone else's personal gain. In this case, my hard work amounted to free publicity and blog traffic for the contest organizer. I'll state upfront that this conversation with our blog readers is not malicious or meant to defame. There are lessons you can all learn. The facts are presented as I experienced them. It's all laid out for your own conclusions and to prompt clarifying information, especially from the contest organizer. So here is the story, you be the judge. Be sure to see the Summary at the bottom for the 'smoking gun' signs I uncovered.

The Original & Revised Contest Rules
The contest started Dec 16, 2008 on the owner's established blog called www.anddjournal. info, for the purpose of promoting his new blog. The original end date was Dec 28, but he extended it to Jan 4, 2009 to allow time to "transfer the money to his Paypal account". It was basically a competition to write the best review post with the proper backlinks. The one winner was to get the $1,000 prize. Surprisingly the organizer stated "This contest will include no blind games." --- that was the last thing on my mind (naive that I was.) On Jan 4, he original contest rules were wiped out when the winner was announced. The contest owner explained how he made the decision, but unfortunately it had little to do with the original runs! All of a sudden page rank was a major factor. Use the scroll box to see the original and revised sections of the post.

I have just started my new website called TechRavings.info and to increase it's popularity, I am throwing a new contest out. This is a simple blogging contest and does not require essentially a blog.

If you are not a blog owner?
If you do not have a blog, you can submit your reviews at - Shvoong.com, AssociatedContent.com, Thisisby.us, YouSayToo.com or any other article site you know.

Rules:
There are no such rigid rules. All you have to do is write a post about my new website - TechRavings.info. You must mention that I am previously owning a weblog known as www.anddjournal.info and TechRavings.info is a new weblog of mine. Comment on the blog layout. Comment on my way of writing posts. You may also mention my age and personal interests. The review should be positive of about 400 words (or more) and should give atleast three backlinks to TechRavings.info and atleast one backlink to www.anddjournal.info
Time:
The contest starts today and will end on 4 January,2009 at 18:00 IST
Deciding of the winner:
This contest will include no blind games. The one that gives a well written review and proper backlinks will be awarded a winner. The winner will be given $1000 in PayPal Cash.
How to enter:
To enter, you will have to subscribe to TechRavings.info by e-mail. To subscribe click here
Then leave comment on this page with with exact url of the page on which you wrote review.
How to increase your chances of winning?
You can increase your chances of winning by writing reviews on your other blogs or on websites like shvoong.com, associatedcontent.com, yousaytoo.com, thisisby.us, etc.
_______________________________________________________________________________

- On Jan 4, the original contest rules were wiped out.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -replaced by this announcement: - - - - - - - - -
This contest has ended and the winner is antiro_morail for shvoong post.
...He is winner because-
1. During this Google update, it was his post
link that aided www.techravings.info to get the pagerank 0 (Not NA).
2.He was the one, that perhaps, was following me from very back and so he could mention that I promised a blog in the beginning of they year.
3.His Post had the highest Page Rank - PageRank 6.
4. he gave two relevant links to www.techravings.info and one relevant link to www.anddjournal.info.

So, according to me he who helped me get a better pagerank(to some extent) and tracked me from very beginning should be given the reward.
This page is live only for 2 days and it will be removed on January 7,2009 IST"

- - - - - - - - - - - - (end of copy of orginal post) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Notice the winning post was on the front page of an article 'blog'. Shvoong has a high page rank, but articles migrate off the front page rather quickly. And the entire contest post was scheduled for the chopping block, to be removed on January 7,2009 --- something I had never heard of! In announcing the winner, the blog owner said "@antiro_morail: Please provide your correct e-mail adress as the e-mail address provided is either wrong or cancelled." --- one of rules was you had to use email subscription, so he had never confirmed?

Protests Start
The first protest came on Jan 6th and I added a comment in support of the complaint. However, my comment which suggested contestants delete their backlinks was never published. I have a copy in the scroll box. Later the blog owner agreed to leave the modified post and not delete it .

Kerri Reed:
It is good to know that the next contest will be based on a random winner. This Contest did not state in the rules that the winner would be selected on who knew about Aditya’s past blogs, or who would get the website a higher page rank. It said in the rules that there would be no tricks to choosing the winner. The person who wrote a relevant and positive review with the necessary backlinks, would be the winner.Next contest is random, so that gives everyone a fair shot. This contest was not based on what it said it would be based on, so I feel that it was just a way for Aditya to get marketing for his website, and used the contest participants as a means to that end. That is unfortunate. Congratulations Antiro Morail!

SBA: (I submitted the following note on Jan 8th but it is was never published. ) "@Kerri Reed - I was sort of thinking what you just said but not wanting to be skeptical, thought I was mistaken (the rules have been wiped out by the message saying post will be deleted soon) -- I did put in a lot of time and though no one commented on my review post, nine people rated it excellent (usually I get only 2 or 3 people at most rating a single post.) But now we know... Since the post is being deleted along with our comments/links then I 'll do the same with my review. LOL But I still congratulate the winner."I sent a second comment questioning why the post was being deleted and that one was published.

SBA "Why are you deleting the post rather than archive it? We would lose any traffic from this site to our reviews — not sure you considered that! Since there was only one ‘winner’ it’s only fair to give the others so longer term acknowledgement!" The blog owner responded "wont’ delete. OK

- - - - - - - - - - - - (end of copy of protest comments) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The winner finally identified himself on Jan 7, but there was still no link to his blog or any way of us connecting with him. He said on 07 Jan 2009 at 6:04 pm:-
"thanks aitya for choosing me winner. My e-mail provided in the comment. Please give me money"
and then 3 hours later the money was transferred and he said at 9:28 pm -
"Got the mony. Tanx. Hope to see more contests."
During that time, the contest organizer sent me a private email saying I would be the winner if antiro did not respond. This was a stall tactic since my comment was never published -- more about that later. I wonder who else got the same pacifiying mail? I decided to leave things along and monitor the second contest that had been announced.

More Flags are Raised.
The slap in the face I mentioned earlier came with a comment not on my review post, but on another post about Googles Friends gadget. There was one comment from "anonymous" who said I should stop talking against this young blogger and just ask him to pay me for my review post. Read it on my review post --- funny, he's English and lives in the same location as the teenage blog owner in India. Would have been nice of him to send a newspaper clipping about this young millionaire.

  1. I don't have any intention to scar his name as blogger, but it seems he is trying to trick people by holding a false contest. Because the winner is not a blogger or anything.http://www.shvoong.com/internet-and-technologies/blog/1856743-www-techravings-info/Shvoong is a service for anyone to write review on site, just like web 2.0 (SU and Digg). He has been very active lately in bloggerforum which I fear that more people will fall into his trap.I would like to keep quiet, but after analyzing his blog, traffic, alexa rank. It is very impossible for him to hold a $1000 contest.I hope you will be more cautious whenever you join contest... [the winning article is now on a back page, PR0]
  2. Funny but .... The article is dated Dec 18 and is not on a personal blog, but a consolidation magazine (they have the real PR 6, not the winner; once you leave the home page it's now on a subpage with PR0!!!). Not sure how PR rank could have been help by one pr6 link!!! (in 2 weeks)... I guess we've been 'had' as they say!
  3. ... He said that was the best review, I think your post is better than that one, and the writing is just like his writing.
  4. I agree with you..He must have scammed you..IMO,just delete the backlinks which you are providing him..

I found this on the forum they mentioned:

There is something that doesn't sound quite right with this thread. I call shenanigans! Why would someone who registered on the same day post TWO post about aditya? And Disappear? No blog of his own. And the site/ so call news story he links....poor english...doesn't sound like a professional news story...more like a submitted story.PS : Dude....there was no need to get this desperate to market yourself. Be honest...

A later private email dialog shared this :
"So it seems to me that he is trying to present a high profile image to the blogosphere(by using dupe accounts and claiming he is a millionaire) and to get other people to do his work for free.... Also to add to that...I think anyone who makes a million from internet blogging click ads etc(more so just a teen) would be featured on TV(how come I have never heard of this guy). Besides his sheer audacity to imagine anyone can become a millionaire just by doing these things...are dellusional or naive or both! ...."

"Another addition...all these URL'shttp://www.prlog.org/10156486-another-domain-to-my-success-the-teenage-millionaire-aditya.htmlhttp://www.free-press-release.com/news/200819/1229703143.htmlhttp://www.daniweb.com/forums/post765253.html are purportedly writen by someone else about him. What becomes apparent(at least to me ) is that the style of writing is similar. Note the forum post is from a user that registered on that day to post just that one entry."

Warning Signs
I found this well written article on how to avoid blog contest scams (fraud). Here are a few quick points that hit home with me. These should make you better prepared to recognize any deceitful methods before you enter a contest. Remember not all contests are bad, we only hear about those that are not run properly or honestly. Fransiska and Mr. I wrote about Organizing Blog Contests, an excellent way to promote your blog. You offer great (but not too great!) prizes and get backlinks and good 'word of mouth' from the contestants. Often the contests gain subscribers and lots of reader comments. All very valuable in the blogosphere. The article about scams lists several categories of scammers. I've selected these two since the contest I entered most closely "behaved" like these.
The Fake: "... there is never really a winner at all, but the scammer pretends that someone has been awarded a prize. ... "
The Changer: "... the scammer will change the rules right in the middle of the contest. ..."

Other red flags:

a) If it's way too good to be true -- you know that story already, so apply it to contests also! In hindsight $1,000 cash without sponsors is a bit much even for someone who is independently wealthy.
b) Contest organizer deletes or never publishes your comments because they raise uncomfortable questions.
c) The winner has no link to his blog, profile or personal website.
d) The contest post is deleted. Sort of like, hiding the evidence.
e) The organizer communicates with you by email instead of openingly in the blog post comments. This is a form of stalling and fake sympathy. In my case, when I suggested removing my backlinks, I was told I'd be given the $1,000 if the declared winner did not provide his email in 36 hours. You guessed it, the winner showed up in the 'eleventh hour.'

Smoking Gun
It took some time researching and writing this post. In the meantime I found these things:

- I followed the second contest held by the same owner on his new blog. The prizes were again cash, totaling $2000 for three randomly selected winners. I saw some of the same warning signs. A contestant had questioned or reminded the owner to 'do it right this time'. That prompted me to submit a comment, which was also not published. I got a couple of personal email to assure me of some 'honest (youthful) mistakes' about one of the winners and that he would ask for the money to be returned. He also said he had never heard much about the YouSayToo site that one of the winners used. But I found his profile on that very site ---the link was sitting in his blog's sidebar!

Here's a copy of my comment:

# SBA Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation.February 1st, 2009 at 11:46 am

Very ironic that you should say "OK, Doubts again". The fact that the 3 winners are not active bloggers makes it a bit doubtful. why bother saying that qualifying blogs need 12 posts when two of them use article sites (kevin Sacco's link doesn't work and it's on an IT discussion forum, Daniel M. joined YouSayToo in Jan and only posted 1 article)! SD's article was written in Jan, but his prior article was Aug and then all others in April of last year — how does this benefit your purposes of links from active blogs? You seriously need to rethink your contest rules. You said to the winners "Also, you can post the image of PayPal or Moneybookers account on your blog to make it clear to others that you were really paid." — neat trick without a blog! I'm waiting to see it before I continue this discussion…

- I then looked very closely at the winner. Someone pointed out there was no link to his blog, so the contest organizer provided the blog link. I found some google ads and some affiliate ads with the same ids as those currently used by the blog owner! Another coincidence maybe? NOT. In his haste, he got a bit careless in using an older blog as the winning link. The affiliate name is 'Rich Reeds' and I had noticed that name in his first blog --- WP shows in the bottom of the browser the real name used to login and write your articles, not the name that you put on the posts. I'm no Sherlock Holmes but they appear to be the same person. Click on these thumbnails for full views (very large images.)

  • ***The posts are by "Aditya" but if you place the cursor over the author name WP shows the real login name of 'richreeds' This only happens when the two are different. Try if for 'SBA' on this post and you see my first name.authornamerichreeds_thumb
  • The affiliate name from the winning site (click to see url in browser)greatonlineaffiliate_thumb
  • is the same as the on on ANDDJournal. info (click to see url in browser)anddjournalaffiliate_thumb
  • These are views of the source code showing the same Google publisher ids: owner's and winner's.

-The icing on the cake in terms of deceit was when I found him using a supposed scan of his 'paypal account', but the image url points to another site. The other site owned by two men also claimed that income using the same image! He had pointed to their image directly (not copied and renamed!) when someone asked for proof of his earnings months ago --- Haste again makes Waste. (click to see full page in browser)

What Can You Do
Things you can do if you get bad vibes about a contest you want to enter.
1- make a protest in the contest post comments or on your blog and ask the owner to explain. If you're not satisfied, remove your backlinks and encourage others to do the same. Use Google cache of the modified post to recover any 'deleted' rules as soon as you find out this was done.
2 - watch for the warning signs and ask questions before you waste your time entering.
3- observe contestants without links and start questioning before the contest ends.
4- read this post, beware of scammers for a real live case.

I have nothing else to say (finally!). Let's hear from you. And that includes the Contest Organizer.

Wow – I’m going to have to read this twice for all the info to sink in.

The only contests I usually enter are the ones where you simply have to post a comment – although I think for this site’s opening, I did register for your RSS feed. I usually don’t do those where I have to blog about it myself and write articles and provide links and so forth. I simply don’t have time and I don’t want someone else dictating what I have to blog about.

I’m running a contest myself right now on my blog and kept it simple: post a comment. The winner wins a tangible product that is coming from someone I trust and who I blogged about in that particular post.

I’ll use random.org to randomly choose from amongst the commentators. Then I’ll post a screen shot of the random.org result, as well as a screen shot of the winning comment. I’m not sure how else to “prove” that everything is on the up and up.

If I ever gave away a gift card, I guess I would mail it certified mail or in some other fashion so as to prove that it got to its intended destination.

It’s too bad that contests, which are supposed to be fun, can turn out to be so controversial. I’m sorry you had to experience that.

I’ll stumble this post, definitely…

You did show people what they should beware of when they enter contest, and hopefully less people get scammed by those so what called blogger who only cheat on other bloggers. I’m glad you send me this post via SU.

I am glad that this is finally all being brought out into the open. It is really unfair of this person to scam people and I will never enter another blog contest again. I definitely knew something was wrong in the first contest, but then when the second contest happened and the winner of $1000 turned out to be someone who hadn’t even followed the rules, I knew it was too good to be true. Thanks for the investigation!!

@Susan Kishner – There will be more to read about this topic! Stay tuned. Thanks for visiting.

@Creative Junkie – Yes, it is rather long- lol but more and more unraveled as I started to pull back the covers. I figured correctly that he might delete posts and so I took screenshots. Most organizer do what you suggest in keeping everything above board and leaving no doubts in contestants minds.

@Sayz – Thank you for encouraging me to dig into this episode, which was not pleasant. Actually I got angrier as it went along. The nerve…

@Kerri Reed – Please don’t say you’ll never enter another contest! Just be more cautious. Let’s not have him spoil that experience for us. Actually I found out today he is ‘on the run’ deleting the contest posts ‘left and right!’. But I have all of the snapshots and links to contestants’ blogs — they will be warned! Luckily I was one step ahead of him as reality hit me and my inner green Hulk came out!

@frags81 – No he has not ‘owned up’ to it — but actions speak louder than words. He is erasing tracks as we speak. I have all of the emails he exchanged with me including the ones where he tried to make me feel sorry for him (quote: “I am too sad with the fact that although I am giving away big amount, there is always some trouble. Perhaps, its because my young age (just 15) that allows me to blog but not help me make wise decisions.”)

Most of us would never suspect anyone of being so deceitful to gain ‘popularity’. Surprisingly the posts are ‘good’ unless there’s another story there also (lol). So the blog did not seem ‘fly by night’ — although all contest posts in both blogs have ‘flown the coop’ .

I see yours is a new blog. You may want to brand with a favicon, gravatar image and have your ‘About’ info be a page/post on your blog and not take readers off to Blogger profile land. lol Thanks for dropping in.

Well, I’m not sure which post you read, but this one is not advocating using contest fraud as a business ‘module’! I see you’re an internet marketer but you need to do better, preferably somewhere else. I removed the url link which is basically a one page directory i.e. not a blog. Leaving your comment as a warning for other blog owners.

Ha ha! Good for you for being real and standing up for honesty in the “blogosphere.’

Thank you, it is these tactics that really need to be brought to light. How pathetic, I mean, we all want traffic, but if you have to resort to posting generic comments just to get your link out there, your site/content must really suck.

But then again, we are talking about “spammers” here, which by definition are frauds whose content is bogus.

And in the scheme of things, such elaborate blogging scams like the contest you experienced, can only be likened to scams on the street perpetrated by low-life’s and thugs. It’s criminal; they do not fit in with the rest of the blogging society and make up the web’s seedy underbelly.

I have been spending quite a bit of time on your blog, really enjoying your articles. You are really a talented blogger, the honesty and integrity alone is beneficial to bloggers and the blogosphere in general. And I’m pretty concieted, I think I am a pretty good blogger myself, I don’t hand out compliments everyday.

Keep on doing what you do, glad I stumbled onto your blog, will definitely be a return visitor.
Have a great day. ~Lauren

At some point you take a stand on spammers/fraud and say ‘enough is enough.’ We have a post scheduled for next week about clueless spammers like this one — they do deserve more exposure.

The best compliments come from the “conceited” — they know talent first hand! (LOL). Based on a quick look at your design skills I can say that your opinion of yourself is not ‘unduly’ high; but saying so is a great way to give a compliment! I’m speechless! Thanks so much for putting this article up, bloggers really need to be careful with these contests. Creative Junkie has some great advise, only participate in contests that don’t require a lot out of you, at least to keep yourself safe. I’ll be sending this post around, thanks again!
