How to Blog Again after a Long Absence

by Ishan · 13 comments

How many times you find yourself unable to post? You stop posting for a few days without any notice and then some time later you want to return to your blog. This happens many times with bloggers. Everyone has a personal life and problems and people might find themselves too busy to post.

When they do get free time, they start writing again. And here is how their first post goes:

Sorry For Long Absence!

Dear Readers, Sorry for the long absence. I was too busy with <reason here>. So, I could not post properly! However, now I have a lot of time and I will  be writing regularly. Hope you all understand.

Here is a small piece of advice: Don't Write This Kind of Post!

I was reading 10 Mistakes That Could Be Killing Your Blog by Leo Babauta some days ago. Mistake #3 was Writing about infrequent posting. He says that these kind of posts are a "Death Knell for a Blog". You should not write that kind of post. Then what should you do?

Here are some ways to start posting again:

1. Write A Pillar Post.

Pillar

Pillar Posts are the posts which are usually long (indepth) and give rise to more ideas. They generally get more traffic and comments than regular posts. Spend your time researching and writing pillar posts. Then market them well. This type of posting will attract any lost traffic and comments to your blog. The extra time getting back to your readers will be worth it.

2. Run A Contest. Contests are a great way to get traffic and new readers. Do not mention that you were absent, just run a big successful contest to attract even more readers.

3. Write Guest Posts.  Guest posts are a good way to get links and traffic. Write some good guest posts on similar niche blogs and also ask  a few friends to write for your blog.

4. Ask a Friend for Help. Friends may help you if you find yourself too busy to post. Ask them to write a few posts in your absence. The topics should be very close to what you might write.

5. Hire a Writer. If you have got a really popular blog, just hire a ghost writer who may write for you during your absence.

Have you ever had a long absence? How did you restart posting? Tell us and other readers by leaving a comment!

Contest can be used to fill when you’re absent from your blog.

i’ve been absent for a couple of months and yup, i read somewhere that it is not advisable to write this kind of post.

contest-wise, havent really given a thought about it. i wonder how to go about it, especially mine being a technical blog. hmmm..

As Mr. I suggested, just jump back in (no one knows you’re back yet, so define the contest now, make it simple and go for it as your first post!) Why not something focused on your prior post which listed your top post for 2008. Something like voting for the best or the best or having readers comment on how they actually used a tutorial or how they improved upon it (if possible!). Winner could be selected based on content or just randomly.

You must have read it at Write to Done. It was a point in one of the posts but had no further explanation. I got the idea from there.

I just recently did this (hangs head in shame) … although I don’t think I apologized. Just referenced it.

Now I know better – thanks for the tip!

That was a great tip. I loved it. And your blog is also too good.

I often get this trouble. I just start and then leave a long gap. After which I myself get bored and delete the blog itself. Lol. I will make use of your tips now.

Hi, I read your post and found it a very interesting. I run a blog on internet marketing. The reason why I started my blog is that I found it quite flexible and good marketing strategy.
