Search Engines

Recently, Creative Junkie commented on one of my SEO related posts:

*sigh* – I hate that I don’t understand this stuff.

This made me realize that I need to introduce readers to some basic terms related with Search Engine Optimization.

  1. SEO: Search Engine Optimization refers to practices used to improve ranks on Search Engine results. This, in turn, brings more traffic to website/blog.
  2. Title: Title is a meta tag that is shown on the title bar of your browser.
  3. Meta Description: Meta Description is not visible to normal visitors. Search Engines show it below the title on results page.
  4. Keywords: Keywords are just like tags. The only difference is that these are used by search engines to determine the relevance of a page to the topic. Assigning right keywords to your pages can increase your search engine traffic dramatically but a wrong step can get you penalized!
Always do some keyword research before assigning keywords to your posts and keep theme relevant. Wrong Keywords can hurt your ranking!
  5. Keyword Density: Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. Ideal keyword density should be around 5-10%.
  6. ALT Text: Alt text is the alternate text that is displayed when a picture is not available. Search Engines consider it in image searches.
  7. Page Rank: Page Rank is Goggle's algorithm(actually, group of algorithms) that is used to determine the position of page on results page.
  8. Inbound Link: A link from another blog/website to your blog is called inbound an link.
Number of Inbound Links is one of the most important factors for SEO. So, you should start building links!
  9. Outbound Link: A link from your blog to some other website/blog is called outbound link.
  10. Internal Link: A link that goes from one page of your blog to another page is called an internal link.
  11. No Follow: No Follow is a link attribute that is used to stop the flow of Page Rank from one page to other. You can make a link no follow by adding rel = "nofollow" inside <a> tag. e.g. < a rel = "nofollow" href = "http://bloggingwithsuccess.net/">
  12. Do Follow: Do Follow means that a link is not nofollow. Remember that this is not an attribute.

These were 12 basic SEO terms from bloggers.

Let me know if I missed something out.

Great list! This has helped me tremendously!

I'm also one of those people unfamiliar with SEO, though I've been researching a great deal about the topic. Thanks for the clarification!

When do you know it’s time to use the No Follow attribute?

RankUno July 31, 2009

You can use nofollow attribute for the following events:

1. When you have trust oriented logos of hacker’s safe, scan’s alert and other award badges on your site. These websites do not need link juice from our website.

2. When you linking to some skeptical sites or content.

3. When linking to internal pages don’t need Page Rank namely, terms of use, login page, registration page, etc.

4. When you have comments under moderation in your blog. Those comments can be attributed as nofollow until they are moderated."

Thanks RankUno, I guess I now understand "no follow". Cheers

I now have several blog posts of yours that I have saved in order to read them and re-read them multiple times to fully understand them. Why this stuff doesn't computer with me, even relatively simple stuff like this vocabulary, is beyond me. I'm wondering if I suffered some awful web-related trauma previously and now have a mental block?

Do not worry. All this looks like alien stuff at first.

Just keep learning in small chunks and you will be expert one day.

I remember that when I was first getting started I had no clue what a lot of this stuff meant. This article should make it clear for a lot of the readers here.
